DEFINITION OF BUBBY
** IN THE EARLY YEARS OF 'BROOKLYNS BASEBALL CLUB' WE HAD AS MANY AS 7 TEAMS PLAYING DURING A SINGLE YEAR WITH OVERLAP BETWEEN MANY OF THEM. USUALLY WE HAD 3 FOOTBALL TEAMS STARTING AFTER THE 4 JULY WITH AS MANY AS 40-80 NAMES BEING PROCESSED PER FOOTBALL TEAM. THE USUAL 2-3 BASEBALL TEAMS WERE STILL PLAYING. THATS GIVE ME UP TO 300 PLAYERS SIMULTANEOUSLY, MOST THAT I HAVE YET TO SEE MORE THAN ONCE OR TWICE. HAVING THE DESIRE AND NEED TO CALL OR REFER TO A PERTICULAR PLAYER INSTANTLY WITHOUT ANY DELAY FOR THINKING OUT WHO HE IS, WE NEEDED A WAY TO CALL PLAYERS.
** EVERYONE WHO GREW UP IN THIS END OF BROOKLYN WHO WAS OF ITALIAN DECENT HAD AS MANY JEWISH FRIENDS AS ITALIAN FRIENDS AND SO UNDERSTOOD BOTH CULTURES.
** THE JEWS USED A YIDDISH WORD THAT I SOMEHOW LATCHED ONTO WHICH I HEARD AS 'BUBBY'. THIS WAS A GREAT SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM.
** THERE WAS HOWEVER A SMALL PROBLEM, WHICH I DECIDED TO IGNORE, THE WORD HAD MULTIPLE MEANINGS DEPENDING ON HOW YOU USED OR SPELLED IT.
** THE FOLLOWING DEFINITION COMES FROM A YIDDISH DICTIONARY. THE WORD IS YIDDISH WHICH IS A JEWISH SLANG LAUGUAGE COMING FROM GERMAN.
Bubby: (rhymes with cubby) (also spelled Bubbe, Bubbeh) - MEANS 'Grandmother ' ( NOTICE THAT THE PRONOUNCING OF THE WORD IS CLOSE BUT NOT QUITE MY PRONONCIATION)
** A SIMILAR WORD IS USED TO REFER TO WOMANS TITTS - 'BOOBIES'
** I WAS USING THE DEFINTION OF THE WORD WHICH I UNDERSTOOD TO MEAN 'DARLING CHILD' USUALLY USED BY GRANDPARENTS. BUT THE ACTUAL WORD FOR DARLING CHILD IS 'Bubbellah'
** AGAIN FROM THE YIDDISH DICTIONAY :
Bubbellah: (the "u" is pronounced like the "oo" in book) an affectionate way of refering to someone, much like "darling" or "sweetheart." Bubbies call their grandchildren "bubbellah."
** SO MY USE SEEMED CORRECT, I JUST SPELLED IT WRONG AND USED THE WRONG PRONOUNCIATION. I SHOULD HAVE USED 'BUBBELLAH' ALL THESE YEARS NOT 'BUBBY'.
** BUT WE ARE SAVED BY THE BELL AS A FUTHER DEFINITION FROM THE SAME YIDDISH DICTIONARY INDICATES WE ARE JUST SPELLING IT WRONG.
Bubbellah: (the "u" is pronounced like the "oo" in book) - Close friends and long-time business partners might call each other "bubbellah," or boubbie, for short. (pronounced like "bookie" vs. the shorter "u" in Bubby as used in for grandmother.)
** THEREFORE THE CORRECT SPELLING OF THE WORD YOUR BEING CALLED IS 'BOUBBIE' MEANING A CLOSE FRIEND OR PEOPLE WHO KNOW EACH OTHER IN A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP. THE WORD HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP. MY INTENDED ORIGINAL USE WAS THAT OF 'DARLING CHILD'.
** YET ANOTHER USE IS:
Bubbellah: (the "u" is pronounced like the "oo" in book) - Also, the nickname of a kosher-for-Passover pancake made with matzoh meal and eggs.
** INTERESTING THAT ALTHOUGH USED ALL THESE YEARS, USING THE EXACT SAME NAME FOR EVERY PLAYER, NOW IN THE THOUSANDS, IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED THAT THE WRONG PLAYER RESPONDED TO ME. THE PLAYER I INTENDED TO ADDRESS ALWAYS RESPONDED.
